【英語なぞなぞ】子供も大人も楽しめる問題＆解説 -PART 4-
こどもたちが大好きな「なぞなぞ」は、英語ではriddle（s）といいます。
英語のなぞなぞで有名なものやおもしろいものをいくつか、解説付きでご紹介します。
1. lots of eyes
What has lots of eyes, but can’t see?
目がたくさんあるのに、見えないものは何？
【答え】
A potato.（じゃがいも）
【解説】
じゃがいもの芽のことを英語では”eyes”といいます。
日本語でも漢字は違いますが、同じ「め」なので覚えやすいですね。
2．buried in Chicago
Why would a man living in New York not be buried in Chicago?
ニューヨークの男がシカゴに埋葬されないのはなぜ？
【答え】
Because he is still living.（まだ生きているから）
【解説】
ひっかけです。「死んだ」なんて言ってませんね。
livingを「生きている」と捉えられれば、すぐにピンとくるかもしれません。
3. yellow house
There’s a one-story house where everything is yellow. The walls are yellow. The doors are yellow. Even all the furniture is yellow. The house has yellow beds and yellow couches. What colour are the stairs?
何もかもが黄色い、1階建ての家がある。壁も黄色、ドアも家具もすべて黄色。黄色いベッドや椅子もある。さて、階段は何色？
【答え】
There aren’t any stairs—it’s a one-story house.（1階建ての家に階段はない）
【解説】
one-story houseは「1階建ての家」という意味。
長い文章でまどわせてくるタイプのひっかけ問題です。
4. add two letters
What five-letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?
2文字足すと短くなってしまう、5文字の単語は何？
【答え】
Short.
【解説】
shortに「er」という2文字を足すと、比較級のshorter（より短い）になりますね。
5. Greater than God
What is Greater than God, more evil than evil, the poor have it, the rich need it and if you eat it you will die?
神よりも偉大で、悪魔よりも悪い。貧しい人は持っていて、裕福な人に必要。そして、これを食べると死んでしまう。これは何？
【答え】
Nothing.
【解説】
答えの”nothing”という単語を文章に当てはめて読むと分かりやすいです。
Nothing is Greater than God.（神より偉大なものはない）
Nothing is more evil than evil.（悪魔よりも悪いものはない）
The poor have Nothing.（貧しい人は何も持っていない）
The rich need Nothing.（裕福な人はもう何も必要ない）
If you eat Nothing, you will die.（何も食べなければ死ぬ）
有名ななぞなぞです。最初に考えた人すごい！！
日本語に訳しても通じるなぞなぞもあれば、英語ならではの表現方法を活かしたものもありましたね。「英語は英語で考える癖」がついていると、なぞなぞでも有利ですね～。
